Week 1 Overview

I chose to read the PDE Ramayana online. I like that it has the audio  option and illustrations and that is available online so that I can access it whenever I want. Thataka and King Janaka seemed interesting to me based off of their reading guide's.

I have never taken a class over epic literature, indian history or culture, or religion before, but I enjoy shows like Game of Thrones. I've never been to India nor do I have an Indian heritage in my family. This class is going to be a very unique experience for me like nothing I have ever done.

I do not recognize any of the characters in any of the photos. I chose the picture below because it is interesting to me that the head of an animal is on a human body.

  1. Hi Taler! That story of Queen Choladevi and how she got the head of a pig (and then got her own head back again) is a fascinating one! It is not part of the epics, but you will probably see lots of pictures of Ganesha... you might think at first he is an elephant god, but he's not — he lost his head (long story), and he ended up with an elephant head instead! He's a god of good luck and beginnings; you can find out more about him here: Ganesha
